Pi Day is the annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi). It is observed on March 14 (3/14 in the month/day format) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. American physicist Larry Shaw organized the earliest known celebration of Pi Day, held in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium. The very first Pi Day celebrations included marching around the Exploratorium’s circular spaces and eating fruit pies. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution (111 H. Res. 224) that recognized March 14, 2009, as National Pi Day. Meanwhile, Princeton University holds several events to celebrate both Pi and Albert Einstein’s birthday, which is also March 14.  Traditional activities during the celebrations are eating pie, throwing pies and discussing the significance of the number π.
